Caravaggio The Complete Works

Fantastic quality of prints – I used these as reference for master copies in my sketchbook, and this provided me with a better understanding of Caravaggio’s work. I read this alongside Art Historian Andrew Graham Dixon’s book about the artist and I feel that this understanding of his own life history and struggles provided me with a better appreciation for Caravaggio in terms of his process and his ability.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES

Caravaggio had a burning desire to be recognised as the best painter in Rome, he certainly had a raw talent (not fully trained?!!) that was recognised by certain Cardinals, but his Common Touch which was his greatest personal quality in his artwork was not appreciated by the Church’s political views.

Interesting to look at his work progress over time from self-portraits to larger alter pieces and his own unique interpretation of events from the Bible and Antiquity.

The importance of the artist’s own view on a topic can be more important than the commission.
