The Primacy of Drawing

This book has been very interesting, I have not read it from cover to cover, rather I have been reading different chapters as they apply to my research. The book is very well written with plenty of examples ranging from antiquity to contemporary times. It provides concise, clear ideas which are clearly referenced with balanced arguments on each chapter heading and it will be a go to book for me for a long time to come.

KEY LEARNING POINTS

Importance of drawing in the artistic process since Ancient Greek times – Pliny’s Corinthian Maid story. Drawing as part of a process for a painting. Drawing as loose, gestural, expressive work, see examples of Walter Sickert – ‘He Killed His Father in a Fight’, and Van Gogh ‘Suffering Artist-Worn Out’.
